In the world of tech, the trend is what keeps the OEMs bustling with new launches. Right from experimenting with motorized slider housing cameras to integrating a new notch design, we have seen many combinations from different smartphone makers. Now, the year 2019 seems to be taking off on a ‘foldable’ note. Samsung had been riding high on the buzz of a foldable phone since last year, but other brands like Lenovo and Xiaomi later shared its thunder. Now, Huawei is also joining the foldable fest and is expected to debut its first 5G compliant foldable phone at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 in Barcelona.
Huawei has revealed that it has slated an event for the MWC 2019 on February 24, 2019, at 14:00 CET (6:30 PM IST). The company broke the news through its official Twitter account and also shared an image that seems to be of a phone folded in a V-shape with light emitting on the exterior. The teaser image is suggestive that the brand could launch its first foldable smartphone with 5G support at the event. Besides, Huawei had earlier confirmed that it would be announcing a flagship foldable phone at the MView image on Twitter
Unlike Samsung’s foldable phone whose prototype we have already seen at one of the company’s events, Huawei’s foldable phone remains a mystery. We are yet to get any images of Huawei’s phone with a foldable design. Earlier this week, a Dutch website LetsGoDigital has uploaded renders of Huawei’s foldable phone based on the information that was available concerning the upcoming phone. As is the case with renders, they only present us with a slight idea of what the final product may look like.
The renders of Huawei’s foldable phone reveal a large display that is folded inwards with the help of a hinge. When closed, the phone acquires a clamshell design. Unlike Samsung, Huawei is going for just one screen that opens and closes in two sizes. Besides, Huawei will be making the phone 5G compliant by integrating it with Balong 5000 chipset that is its first commercial 5G router.
Huawei Foldable Phone Rumored Specifications, 5G Compliance
Some of the other reports concerning Huawei’s foldable phone, it is rumored to come powered by Kirin 980 chipset with Dual Neural Processing Unit (NPU). Interestingly, Huawei registered a slew of trademark applications for model names like Mate Fold, Mate Flex, Mate Flexi, and the Mate F. This means that the company will most likely be adding ‘Flex’ word to the device’s name to signify its foldable design.
While there is a lot of hype around 5G devices, 5G networks are still under testing phase and far from attaining release this year. We wonder how 5G compliant phones are going to dominate the tech arena at the MWC 2019. Not just Huawei, many other OEMs like LG are also riding high on the 5G hype. It would be interesting to see how these devices turn out with their design quirks and 5G branding. We will be watching out for Samsung, LG, and Huawei at the MWC 2019.
